Gen Con 2010 Report Part 1 – Exhibit Hall

I just realized that I’ve been back from Gen Con Indy 2010 now for at least three weeks without having told you much about it.

I arrived in Indianapolis late on Wednesday evening and checked into the hotel, calling it a night. Thursday morning I went down to the convention center to check in and pick up my badge. The lines were amazing! The pre-registration line alone went from the starting point through all the “snaking” lines they’d set up, down the hall, back by the door, and all the way around to where the press room was setup. It was the longest Gen Con line I’d ever seen. I suspect also, in retrospect, that attendance was much higher than in previous years. If not, it certainly seemed that way.

Being a member of the press, I was fortunate that I didn’t have to stand in that long line. I made my way to the press room and checked in, receiving my badge. I then walked down to the Exhibit Hall to look around.

The “Who North America” folks were there, with their Tardis prop and tons of Dr. Who themed merchandise. I’m guessing their sales were pretty decent, because a couple of items I’d intended to pick up were sold out when I went back later during the convention to buy them, and several other interesting items I saw were sold out as well.

WizKids promoted some new HeroClix figures, including a set from the Watchmen movie. Their “Colossal Dr. Manhattan” figure was very impressive and detailed, but priced at $80 it was a bit out of my range.

One company who always manages to impress me at Gen Con is Fantasy Flight Games. In 2008 and 2009, I was really impressed with what they’d done with the Battlestar Galactica franchise. I was even more impressed at how popular their demos of the game and its Pegasus expansion were. I couldn’t even sit down for a demo of either at Gen Con. Since then, of course, I’ve had the opportunity to play the Galactica game at Origins and really enjoyed it. My brother Matt, who was at Gen Con and Origins this year, played several rounds of Galactica at both. I’ve been trying to get him to provide us with a strategy guide for the game, but no luck yet.

But I digress. This year, I was interested in seeing the Dust Tactics game that Fantasy Flight is selling:

Fantasy Flight Games' Dust Tactics

When I went to sign up for games at Gen Con, I was unable to get into any of the Dust Tactics sessions that were running. It appears that once again the folks at Fantasy Flight have another winner on their hands. Congrats! (Since I’ve been accused of sarcasm at times when it wasn’t intended, nothing I’ve said here was meant that way. I am genuinely impressed with the work Fantasy Flight is doing, with their representatives at the conventions, and the success of their product lines. No sarcasm here.)

Each year at Gen Con, there seems to be a common theme among several vendors’ products. A couple of years back, it was pirates and zombies. If you had more than one product for sale, it seemed like you had at least one with a pirate or zombie theme. This year, there seemed to be two recurring themes.

One was paper or cardstock terrain and buildings. For example, Fat Dragon Games was there with its various terrain items, including Dragonshire, E-Z Dungeons, and the like.

Fat Dragon Games Terrain Items

Fat Dragon Games

World Works Games presented a slightly different line of paper terrain, Terraclips:

Wyrd Miniatures Terra Clips

These are basically components you assemble using plastic clips. This allows you to do things like explore up and down through a building by unclipping and removing (or adding onto) the structure as you move miniatures through it.

Terraclips Pieces

These folks offered paper based maps:

Another recurring theme was the whole “Steampunk” genre, which was represented by quite a few vendors in the Exhibit Hall. Like this booth, which was pretty much all steampunk-themed items:

S1050073.JPG

The booth also featured this “Steam Powered Computer”:

Steam Powered Computer

And these folks, with steampunk (and perhaps a bit gothic?) clothing and hats:

S1050106.JPG

There were some others I don’t have pictures of who had steampunk goggles, watches, glasses, and other items.

While in the Exhibit Hall, I enjoyed what I saw in several booths, including:

  • Z-Man Games: They celebrated their 10th anniversary this year, and held a drawing for a collection of all their games.
  • Catalyst Game Labs: Producers of Shadowrun and Battletech, their booth featured a large red mech prop. It seemed to be one of the busier booths in the hall.
  • Privateer Press: Their Warmachine and Hordes games always seem to draw lots of attention and requests for demos. Their miniatures are consistently among the coolest I see at Gen Con.
  • GameSalute.com: Game Salute is all about promoting specialty games. The site actually represents a network of game professionals, retailers, media members, publishers, and others.
  • Hirst Arts: Makers of various molds which produce parts you can assemble into all kinds of fantasy, gothic, and sci-fi terrain.
  • The Game Crafter: Something that’s gotten attention in writing circles recently is the self-publishing options. Writers no longer need to work through agents and publishers to get books to market. Using sites like Amazon’s CreateSpace, you can self-publish a book offer it for sale through Amazon.com and other outlets at pricing competitive to big-name publishers. The Game Crafter is attempting to do the same, but for those who want to manufacture board games.
  • Geeky Clean: I didn’t really spend a lot of time at this booth, but I did find it interesting. They sell soap. Their soaps are shaped and labeled to represent various science fiction and gaming properties, like “Tardi-Soap” that’s shaped like a certain blue time machine, Browncoat field ration soap, and “Bar Trek” soap. Silly stuff. (Not cheap, either. A bar of Tardi-Soap, while large, is $10.00. But I must be alone in that thought, as they apparently sold out of it at Gen Con.)
  • Irondie: I didn’t stop to talk to the fellow running this booth because he seemed pretty busy with other visitors, but they offer some metal dice with very unusual shapes. From what I’ve gathered off their web site, this is a dice oriented game based on the collectible dice they sell. The “collectible” element turns me off, to be honest, but I did think the dice were very neat looking.

In Part 2 of my Gen Con report, I will talk about a couple of the games I played at Gen Con. In Part 3, I’ll talk about the seminars I attended.

Gen Con 2009 – Day One

My brother and I arrived in Indianapolis around 6:30pm Wednesday. We checked into our hotel and then went to dinner at the Rock Bottom Brewery. After dinner, we took a walk through the convention center and picked up a Gen Con program to familiarize ourselves with what was going on this year. It was about 9:30pm at this point and the convention staff asked us to clear out, which we did.

Thursday, we toured the Exhibit Hall. I posted the pictures on Flickr temporarily. I’ll place them here on The Gamer Hotsheet once I’m back home again. I’ve only talked to a few of the exhibitors so far, though I expect to talk to more of them today.

Compared to last year’s exhibit hall, the number of exhibitors appears to be down quite a bit. The art section is larger, and there are large areas of what you might refer to as “open” space in the back of the room where children’s games and other family activities are taking place. In the past, these areas would have been filled by exhibitors or a sparse seating area.

There are a lot of familiar faces in the Exhibit Hall this year. Catalyst Game Labs has a prime spot near the main Exhibit Hall entrance, Titan Games is here, Fantasy Flight Games, Goodman Games, Pegasus Publishing, Konami, Paizo, Aberrant, Champions Online, and Privateer Press. Some exhibitors I didn’t recall seeing before are here, too, including the Chicago Toy and Game Fair, Game Crafters, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and various medieval clothing and jewelry vendors. The Flickr gallery I linked to above should show you the vast majority of the vendors here in the hall.

Odd Society

I talked with the developers of an online game called “Odd Society” for a little while. Af first blush, it looks like yet-another MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). It isn’t. For a start, it’s a single-player online game (“SPOG”?). To play, you purchase the game for ~$10 U.S. which includes 12 hours of playing time. Gen Con attendees who speak with the vendor are given a code that allows the game to be purchased at a substantial discount. The gist of this game is that a society of creatures called “ODDs” lived in a factory tower. Some of them were cast out and are trying to survive outside the tower. You, the player, are helping them rebuild their world through quests you take on in the game.

The graphics look decent, and gameplay is handled through a point-and-click interface. The in-game quests form a storyline that should appeal to adventure/RPG fans.

The developers explained that the concept of this game is to provide a more relaxing alternative to a typical MMO like World of Warcraft (WoW). WoW players often have to be in guilds to succeed in arena and raid activity, and these guilds usually demand players be online certain times of day, days of the week, and play for so many hours per week. This can become difficult or stressful on the player. Odd Society dispenses with this multiplayer concept. Players can be online for as short or long a time as they like. They can be online whatever days and times they like. They don’t have to worry about meeting the demands of guilds, raiding parties, arenas, battlegrounds, etc. Of course, the unspoken flip side of this is that it’s a solitary experience without the social elements of a typical MMO.

Fantasy Flight Games’ Battlestar Galactica “Pegasus” Expansion

In my Origins 2009 write-up, I discussed the base “Battlestar Galactica” game. It’s actually a really fun game, even if it’s tilted heavily in favor of the Cylons. Fantasy Flight is demonstrating the Pegasus expansion here at Gen Con, and I’m planning to sit with them for a demo later today. I’ll tell you more when I know more.

Writing Right Seminar

This morning I attended the “Writing Right” seminar, a panel discussion of three established and published authors. In it, they shared their thoughts on what it takes to get a novel written, and make it a good one.

When asked what one aspect of the craft of novel writing they felt was most important, the panelists all agreed that character was key. Good characters, they said, can sustain a bad plot but bad characters won’t keep a good plot afloat. One author suggested writing a complete biography of all your main characters before you start your novel, so that you know what that character desires, fears, loves, hates, etc. This will help you as you flesh out the story.

Another, seemingly obvious, tip was that you need to actually get a draft of your novel written. You can fix the problems in a 300-page draft and turn it into a decent novel. You can’t fix 300 blank pages.

One suggested you try outlining your novel before you begin writing, though the other panelists say they don’t do this.

One panelist said that although he usually develops his novels “organically” (writing it as he goes rather than following an outline), in a case where he was having trouble fitting all the scenes he’d written together properly he used index cards on which he wrote down each significant scene in the book, one per card. Then he was able to set the cards down on a table and work out a way to arrange them that resolved the problem.

Another common piece of advice was “Don’t quit your day job” while working with your schedule, spouse, etc., to make sure you set aside both time to write and time for your family.

Goodman Games Offers Gen Con Trade-in Deal

The Goodman Games web displayed the following offer when I checked today:

If you’re attending Gen Con this year, make sure to visit Goodman Games! You can save up to 50% at our booth when you trade in your used 3E books. We’ll have seven new releases, including a number of convention exclusives, as well as two big announcements.

Gen Con 2008 Exhibit Hall – Day 1

Here are a few snaps of the goings-on in the Exhibit Hall at Gen Con Indy 2008 today:

Wyrd Miniatures at GenCon Indy

Wyrd
Miniatures
posted the following Gen Con Indy news on their
web site:

Wyrd Miniatures is off to
GenCon Indy! We’re loaded up with boxes out the whaazoo, have the truck
loaded to the gills and the trailer attached to the back squealing
under the pressure of all the metal goodness we’re toting off with us.

Stop by and see us in our double booth at #1332 where we’ll have all of
our studio paint jobs on display as well as the metal addiction we’ve
all come to love. We’ll have the full lineup of Wyrd minis released to
date as well as an additional six (6) miniatures which we are
pre-releasing at GenCon.

As always, we’re going to be running a few specials and give aways
during the convention. For every $25USD you spend at the booth, you get
a raffle ticket with which you’ll have a chance to win one of our
studio painted miniatures which will be on display at the convention
(purchases are cumulative, $50 gets two tickets, $75 three tickets ..
etc). On Sunday we’ll be making the drawing for the winner and you can
walk home with your prize, or, if you aren’t available, we’ll send it
directly to you at our cost.

Bought one of our shirts? Great! For showing your enthusiasm and
support of Wyrd Miniatures at the convention we’ll be giving away a
free miniature when you stop by our booth proudly displaying your
Wyrd’ness.

Joining the GenCon Painting Contest? Fantastic! If you’ve painted up a
Wyrd miniature, we will be doing the judging for a manufacturers award
which we’ll be giving away a $100USD coupon which is good at the booth
where you can come and snag up the latest releases for nothing. Also,
for taking the time to paint a Wyrd miniature, come on by the booth
with your painted miniature and contest entry card and we’ll give you a
free miniature for showing your Wyrd colors!

Wyrd is once again sponsoring the Paint and Take as well as the Speed
Painting event this year which will be ran by the volunteers at GenCon
T-F-S at 3pm. We understand that all of the Speed Painting slots have
been filled but that the event coordinators always factor in a couple
of extra slots so stop by and enjoy, naturally there will be prizes for
1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Speed Painting Contests.

Lastly, Eric will be in the booth this year with a fantastic demo table
that we’ve had put together for us to showcase an early showing of our
skirmish game Malifaux. The game isn’t complete yet, and no we won’t be
selling any advance copies, this is just our way of giving an early
preview of the rules, mechanics and product.

Looking forward to meeting everyone, stop by the booth and say hi! Oh
… and buy minis.

Twilight Creations at Gen Con Indy

From the Twilight Creations site comes the
following news:

Being a huge fan of their “Zombies!!” game, you can bet I’ll be there
to check out these new titles!

APE Games To Be At Gen Con Indy 2008

Advanced
Primate Entertainment

booth for people who want to hook up to play their own games.
They’ll have a limited supply of Zombie Gamer cards that
they’ll be giving away with purchases of the OOTS Adventure Game.
They had 50 copies of their duck! duck! GO! game shipped in
