RPG News – August 21, 2011

  • Holistic Design Inc. has announced plans to release their Noble Armada space combat game on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices as Fading Suns: Noble Armada.
  • Mongoose Publishing’s Out of Print Sale includes Paranoia: Stuff, RuneQuest I Main Rulebook, and RuneQuest Companion.  There are 64 items in the sale as of this writing.
  • Paradigm Concepts has put Witch Hunter: The Invisible World – Aztec Empire for sale on their online store.
  • Pinnacle Entertainment Group (PEG) has posted images of new Deadlands miniatures, information about changes in Savage Worlds Deluxe around damage and healing, a sneak peek at Agents of Oblivion, and more.
  • The Federation Commander web site has launched a YouTube channel in which they’ll talk about specific product lines, new product releases, and the actual contents of product boxes.
  • Radioactive Press has released their first pregenerated monster for Giant Monster Rampage 3rd Edition.  Monarch is available at RPGNow and Wargame Vault.
  • Random Encounters has released its micro-game Deniable Asset: Hiding in the Mosque for free download through their E-Store.  It’s a prelude to their upcoming Deniable Asset espionage game.
  • Palladium Books announced that Rifts: Vampire Kingdoms is now shipping.
  • Skirmisher Publishing has posted a thought-provoking entry on Gen Con 2011, in which they discuss how smaller publishers were treated this year, and how the company’s sales at Gen Con were 1/8 what they’ve been in past years.  It’s interesting reading.
  • Super Genius Games has released Codex Draconis: Red Tyrants of the Mountains.  This module is Pathfinder and OGL compatible, 25 pages long, and priced at $3.99.
  • Triple Ace Games released All For One: Paris Gothic in eBook form.
  • Avalon Games announced the release of Horror Show, a new RPG by Bedrock Games.  It’s based on terror movies and is described as perfect for one-shot adventures and full-length campaigns.
  • Evil Hat Productions posted pictures from the ENnie awards during Gen Con.
  • Green Ronin Publishing won three ENnies.  They’ve also released Mutants & Masterminds Threat Reports #32 and #33.
  • Margaret Weis Productions has announced Marvel Heroes, a family of RPG products based on the Marvel Comics universe.
  • Paizo has announced the release of a new Pathfinder novel, Master of Devils by Dave Gross.
  • Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) has released printable PDF maps for Ninja: Legend of the Scorpion Clan, announced the upcoming release of Nightfall: Blood Country and Thunderstone: Heart of Doom in October.
  • Night Of Mystery is offering a chance to win a free Murder Under the Big Top party to the the author of the best comment about why they’d like to throw the party.  See their site for full details.
  • Postmortem Studios released a preview of their upcoming Gosh, Spies! game.  Gosh, Spies! is a supplement for Agents of SWING that delves into the realm of children’s, tweens, and teens adventure fiction.
  • Rogue Games is taking pre-orders for Colonial Gothic: The Grimoire.
  • Arc Dream Publishing posted stories and photos about their Gen Con experience, including winning their first ENnies!
  • Inkwell Ideas has released a free Random Map Generator for Dungeonographer.
  • Machine Age Productions has released recordings of their Gen Con 2011 seminars.  The recordings include Things You Think About Games, The No-No’s of Game Design, Lessons from Indie Publishing, Design an RPG in an Hour, Game Design is Mind Control, and The Legal Rules of Gaming.  All these seminars are available in MP3 format.
  • The Eclipse Phase web site announced the release of Panopticon and the Eclipse Phase Core Hack Pack.

Pathfinder Advanced Players Guide in PCGen

logoThe PCGen (open source RPG character creator) now contains the seventh and final update to the Pathfinder Advanced Player’s Guide OOC Data Set.  This is a release intended to deliver the most current fixes for the Pathfinder APG data set.  The file also patches the Pathfinder Role Playing Game Core Rulebook and Bestiary. 

RPG News – August 8, 2011

  • Hex Games has released Edison Force in PDF format.  This is a role-playing game set in the early 20th century in which a team of men and women work with famous inventor Thomas Edison to fight diabolical menaces.  It’s based on the QAGS system.
  • The Federation Commander page posted an article about how to play Star Fleet Battles or Federation Commander online, in real-time, against live opponents.
  • Radioactive Press has announced the availability of the second edition revised and expanded PDF of Atomic Super Humans.
  • Skirmisher Publishing has posted a game design article on skills in RPGs.
  • Timeline Ltd. now has a Facebook page for The Morrow Project.
  • Avalon Games has posted its August Preview, including the next installment of Airship, new Arcana items, new editions of Space Armada, Conjurer, and Alien Incursions. 
  • Paizo Publishing has released Inner Sea Magic, a campaign setting book for Pathfinder.
  • Blackwyrm is taking pre-orders for Terracide, Widening Gyre, Lux Aeternum, Posthegemony: Terra Nomenklatura, Wreck of Alpha Central, and more.
  • Postmortem Studios has posted a review of the Infrno site, a web-based RPG playing application that is currently in beta, allowing players to run RPGs over the web.
  • UKG Publishing has updated the PDF for their Passion, Powder & Plunder product to correct some errors, inviting owners to download a new copy.

RPG News – July 30, 2011

  • Hero Games is planning to be at Gen Con next week and reports that everything is on track for Star Hero, including having copies of the book to sell at the con.  The Advanced Player’s Guide II is still in layout.
  • Indie Press Revolution (IPR) has published Coronets but Never Crowns which is a Family and Politics expansion for Houses of the Blooded that shows how to let loose your powerful.
  • Kenzerco reports that Hackjournal #36 is available in PDF format, and includes special pre-release material including alpha and beta rules previews for future HackMaster products.
  • Palladium Books announced that Rifts Vampire Kingdoms is at the printer. They expect to have a limited number of copies at Gen Con Indy.  The Rifter #55 has shipped. 
  • Peril Planet has slashed prices on Space Rat, The Beast of Limfjord, and The Green and the Tan via DriveThruRPG and RPGNow.
  • Pinnacle Entertainment Group has finished the greens for six new minis.
  • Postmortem Studios has been working on two secret projects for the last few months, one of which is Outbreak, a "choose your own adventure" style game for the iPad.
  • Precis Intermedia Games has begun taking pre-orders for the softcover edition of Story Engine.  Purchase now and you’ll get the PDF edition with it.
  • Tabletop Adventures will not be attending Gen Con this year.  However, until July 31 they are offering their entire catalog of electronic products at 20% off through paizo.com, Steve Jackson Games’ e23, RPGNow, DriveThruRPG, and Your Games Now.
  • Triple Ace Games is releasing a new Region Guide for The Borderland.  They’re taking pre-orders for Paris Gothique, and will be flying to Indianapolis for Gen Con.
  • UKG Publishing released Powder, Passion, and Plunder, the fifth SotC supplement.

RPG News for July 23, 2011

  • 0One Games has released two new products.  The first is a set of blueprints in the Eerie Forest line entitled Red Vampire’s Way Inn.  The second is The Sinking: The Devil’s Smuggler is a short adventure written by John Ling that is set in the Great City.  Also available is a basic RP conversion entitled The Spirit of the White Wyvern (which is free).
  • Adamant Entertainment announced that it will be producing the Buckaroo Banzai Adventure Game, a tabletop RPG based on the movie.  It’s planned for a release in the spring of 2012.
  • On Thursday, the Amarillo Design Bureau posted an article on playing Star Fleet Universe games long distance.
  • Avalon Games recently posted Part 3 of a multi-part Market Report talking about how print products have a lot of downsides to them (and that e-publishing also has its downside). Interesting reading if you’re thinking of publishing a PDF roleplaying product.
  • The Fellowship of the White Star crew plans to be at Gen Con Indy 2011, offering two premieres (one of which is the conclusion to the Jack the Ripper series) and multiple 1908 modules.
  • Goodman Games announced that the Age of Cthulu 6: A Dream of Japan will be released in November.
  • Hero Games has been prepping mock-ups of their booths to maximize their use of space at Gen Con.  They are also continuing the layout on The Advanced Player’s Guide and writing The Book of the Empress.
  • Indie Press Revolution (IPR) has added several new products to their store recently, including Atlas Games’ Festival of the Damned Anniversary Edition, Faerie Stories (also from Atlas), Kobold Quarterly Magazine 18 (from Open Design), pre-orders for Pelgrane Press’ Out of Time and Dead Rock Seven.
  • Kenzer and Company is taking pre-orders for Bundle of Trouble Volume 3 and Hacklopedia of Beasts.  The newest Knights of the Dinner Table trade paperback is available in their online store as well.
  • Mike Young’s web site says that Jim MacDougal’s Marin County New Age Society Cocktail Party is now available for download.
  • Palladium Books has posted a sneak preview of their Rifts Vampire Kingdoms title to be released in August.  The preview includes the front cover, notes on the vampire menace, details on the process of staking vampires, and lists of vampire powers and weaknesses.
  • Postmortem Studios has posted a preview of their Gosh, Spies! title, which covers "the phenomenon of child/tween/teen spies within the world-setting Agents of SWING".
  • Precis Intermedia is taking preorders for Story Engine Plus starting on Monday, July 25, 2011.
  • Radioactive Press is planning a release of the printed edition of Atomic Super Humans Core Rulebook Second Edition for release in late July or early August.
  • Rogue Games has been nominated for a Gaming Genius award.
  • Triple Ace Games (TAG) has released Richelieu’s Guide to Science and a Rocket Rangers adventure tale for  Ubiquity.

RPG News–July 12, 2011

  • Adamant Entertainment’s ICONS has been nominated for three 2011 ENnie Awards at Gen Con Indy.  The PDF version is half off until the awards.
  • Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) has posted a list of cards that are banned from the War of Honor: Current and War of Honor: Extended tournaments.
  • Chaosium announced that the Call of Cthulu 30th Anniversary Edition is on its way. 
  • Variant Media’s FaceEater game will be at Gen Con.
  • Green Ronin Publishing has received eight nominations for the ENnie Awards, including nominations for Best Art, Best Game, Best Rules, and Best Setting.
  • Hero Games plans to be at Gen Con.  They’ve recently sent The Advanced Player’s Guide II for Hero System to their layout people, and begun doing the prep work for The Book of the Empress.
  • Hex Games has created a rough draft of a new system for ritual magic. They’re looking for feedback and playtesting.
  • Indie Press Revolution (IPR) is featuring 25% off all  Blue Panther Products as of this writing.
  • Kenzer and Company is expecting to release Bundle of Trouble Vol. 3 on August 1 (pre-orders appear to still be available) and Hacklopedia of Beasts is expected July 20.
  • Mongoose Publishing has the Vuldrok Fleet available for pre-order on their site, for use with A Call to Arms: Noble Armada.
  • As part of their ninth anniversary celebration, Paizo is offering 10% off one order before the end of July.
  • Palladium Books announced their participation in Gen Con and says that The Rifter #55 is at the printer.
  • Paradigm Concepts, as part of Free RPG Day, is offering an Arcanis Fast Play PDF for free on their site.
  • Pinnacle Entertainment Group (PEG) announced that the first set of miniatures for Savage Worlds are available on their web store at Studio 2 Publishing.
  • Radioactive Press says that their next Toy Battle System core rulebook, Monster Mash, is about finished. This is a turn based combat game for two or more players.
  • Sins of the Past, an adventure for the sci-fi horror role-playing game Abandon All Hope is on sale at RPGObjects.
  • Super Genius Games has received an ENnie nomination for Mythic Menagerie: Kingdom of Graves.  To celebrate the honor, they are having a sale where you can buy this title for only $1.00.

  • Three Crowns Game Productions (3CG) is out of stock on Tannenberg 1914.
  • Asmodee plans to be at Origins 2011.  They’ve also initiated a replacement program for the 7 Wonders Age III cards that had discoloration issues.
  • Atlas Games has updated the errata for Ars Magica 5th Edition.
  • Bezier Games has released 8 new maps for Steam/AoS in an expansion pack.  They are also offering “TieBreaker” which is labeled “The definitive method for determining who wins ties”.
  • For those who remember the old “Shrinky Dinks” toys, check out BSW Toys.
  • Cambridge Games has added the game “Hot Potato” by Rob Seater.
  • Clash of Arms has The Emperor’s Fleet on pre-order and the reprints for War without Mercy has been reprinted.
  • Eagle Games is taking pre-orders for Montage, Dragon Rampage, Number Please!, and Mirror, Mirror.
  • Elfinwerks has posted a behind the scenes look at Therion’s “011” movie based on the upcoming Elfinwerks and Scribabs boardgame 011.
  • Family Games Inc. has added the Dao game to their product line.
  • Family Pastimes has added three new games this year:  AARI (a game of real and phony acronyms), Dragonfly, and Sahara Search.
  • Ghoulash is giving away a free RPG scenario “Ghouls Gone Wild” on their site.
  • Gigamic received a 2011 “Best Abstract Game” award for Cubulus.
  • Stratus Games is taking pre-orders for Eruption, their game of survival on an island with an active volcano.
  • Super Duper Publications, which makes education games for special needs children, has added a Story Starters iPhone app and some other items recently.
  • TDC Games has added the Campbell’s Alphabet Dice Game, College football-shaped puzzles, Baseball Across America puzzle, World’s Smallest College Football puzzle, and Spherical Jigsaw puzzles.
  • Treefrog Games is offering the rules to Ankh-Morpork on the game page.  The game should be ready by September.

  • 0One Games, a fairly prolific publisher, has released many new products for June, including some items for The Sinking, some Black & White Adventures, and Blueprints.
  • Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) posted previews of Forgotten Legacy.
  • Chaosium is having the Father Dagon’s Father’s Day Sale, with 30% off most items on the web site until Tuesday morning.
  • The Dragonstorm RPG page lists Dragon Storm Con 2011 for July 22-24, 2011. 
  • Evil Hat Productions has a Kickstarter project going on to raise funds for Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple – A Storytelling Game.
  • Expeditious Retreat Press (XRP) is having a deep discount sale to clear out merchandise before the relocation to Columbus, Ohio.  All 4e D&D materials except Freeport are priced at only $1, and Freeport is priced at $5.  Other items are similarly reduced.
  • Hex Games released J.I.N.G.O., America’s combat squad, an RPG based on 1980’s toy-based cartoons.
  • Mongoose Publishing is working with Holistic Design to produce Noble Armada: A Call to Arms.
  • Indie Press Revolution is featuring a 25% off sale on all Blue Panther products, and has several RPG bundle products discounted significantly.
  • Kenzer and Company plans to release the Hacklopedia of Beasts and Bundle of Trouble volume 3 in July.

  • Freeform Games has released two new murder mystery games:  A Will to Murder and Arabian Nights.

  • Postmortem Studios posted “very basic, very rough” rules for a Dust RPG for free download on their site.
  • Precis Intermedia is offering the Active Exploits Diceless Special Edition Softcover free with purchases of Pete Spahn’s Stormrift RPG (for a limited time).

  • Sanguine Productions plans to release the latest book for Ironclaw, Squaring the Circle, later this month.  They expect to display it at Origins 2011.
  • Second Rat Games has released 100 Deathtraps via RPGNow and an iPhone App for Background Noise.
  • Silverlion Games has finished High Valor and it’s available for purchase in PDF and print.
  • Skortched Urf Studios has released Fursona, a Pathfinder system that can quickly generate new alien species, demi-human, or metahuman races for fantasy gaming.
  • Studio 2 Publishing will be at Origins 2011 in booth #317.  Exile Game Studio will join them.  They will be running demos of Hollow Earth Expedition, too.
  • Wizards of the Coast announced the release of Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, which includes deck editing, a new multiplayer format, and other changes.

The Elusive Foe Released as PDF

Elusive_FoeInteraction Point Games announced on May 27, 2011, that the second book in the Relics of the Lost Gods trilogy of Pathfinder RPG compatible adventures has been officially released in PDF.  You can purchase it via RPGNow, e23, and Paizo.

Kingdoms of Legend: The Elusive Foe is an adventure for four third level heroes, and can be run as a standalone module or as a sequel to Kingdoms of Legend: The Hidden Threat.

Goodman Games Playtesting Dungeon Crawls

Goodman Games is playtesting its Dungeon Crawl Classics titles at a number of game stores over the next few months.  Upcoming dates include San Diego, Iowa City, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Cleveland, TN.  See their site for more information and exact dates.

Hex Games Releases Roller Girls Vs.

On April 10, Hex Games released Roller Girls Vs., which is an adaptable adventure scenario which recreates a roller-derby environment with monsters and danger tossed in.  Your roller girls could fight zombies, aliens, or just about anything else you care to throw at them.

The scenario is designed for use with the QAGS system.  It includes a summary of roller derby rules, information on character creation, popular character archetypes, a typical plot outline, and more.

It can be picked up for the low price of $4.99 in PDF format.

  • Avalon Games posted an article about how they hope to turn more of their customers into fans.
  • Blackwyrm Games has added Unkindness (Hero) in print form and Pretty Hate Machines (Hero) in both E-Book and Print form to their catalog.

  • Paizo Publishing has posted information about the latest Pathfinder module: Strangers Among Us.
  • RPGNow is listing several new releases, including Avalon Design Elements Parchment Set 4 and Stone Set 4, The Kerberos Club (Savage Worlds Edition), The Genius Guide to Arcane Archetypes, Desert Village, Malleus Monstrorum, 100 Towns, and more.
  • Tabletop Adventures is celebrating its sixth anniversary, offering its electronic products at 15% off the usual prices. Their one page Dungeon Codex 2009 product is available through July 18. Information about their Gen Con plans is also posted.
  • Thoughtful Games says that a French edition of Montsegur 1244 is underway for a fall 2010 release.

RPG News – 07/15/2010

Today’s news:

  • RPGObjects announced “Abandon All Hope“, a new RPG from the creator of Darwin’s World (Dominic Covey). There is no ETA yet on the release date, but GenCon attendees will have the opportunity to playtest the game on August 5 and 7.
  • According to Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG), there will be an Exclusive L5R Honor Event at GenCon 2010 on August 7. According to the announcement “AEG will offer the Clans and their representatives at GenCon the chance to match their skills through a Live Performance Contest.”
  • Amarillo Design Bureau’s web site posted an article today saying that “some people don’t realize that you can download what amounts to a free copy of the Federation Commander game (well, enough of the game to play a few battles).” It also says “But that’s just a start. If you join the Commander’s Circle, which is free, you can download the monthly Communique which includes scenarios, tactics, and new ships. You can also access a database of Federation Commander players looking for new opponents.”
  • Goodman Games has posted an official errata document for Amethyst.
  • Mongoose Publishing announced Races of Glorantha Volume One and Nations of Barsaive 2: Serpent River this week.
  • Morrigan Press’ Talislanta web page announced that new materials have been added to the “Magic, Spells, and Grimoires” page and the “Fan Materials” page.
  • Paradigm Concepts announced that a Shattered Empires Action Dial is now available. A limited edition Shattered Empires T-shirt is also available.
  • Skirmisher Publishing has added an online game store.
  • Triple Ace Games announced that they’ve received a 2010 Ennie Award nomination for the Best Monster or Adversary book category, for their Hellfrost Bestiary.

  • Studio 2 Publishing announced that new items are coming from Crafty Games, Sanguine Productions, and Third Eye Games. Fantasy Craft, Ironclaw: Squaring the Circle, and Wu Xing: The Ninja Crusade, are all discussed.
  • RPGNow has added a number of new products, including Mongoose’s “Terror of the Darklords”, Fat Dragon Games’ EZ-Dungeon Expansion 3, White Wolf’s Prince of the City, and several more.
  • Radioactive Press has posted an update about its recent activities, including playtesting some Toy Battle System games.
  • Precis Intermedia Games has released Token Packs for Smiteworks’ Fantasy Grounds II software.
  • Palladium Books is running its “Christmas in July” promotion until July 25.
