Upper Deck Forced to Drop Yu-Gi-Oh! Support

Upper Deck has apparently been ordered to cease and desist producing Yu-Gi-Oh! card game products. This is the announcement on their web site:

North Las Vegas, NV (February 26, 2009) – Throughout this uncertain time for the Yu-Gi-Oh! players and retailers, Upper Deck has continued in good faith to support the community of which it has been an integral part for six years.

Despite having no new product since December of 2008, Upper Deck has continued to ship league kits to hobby stores, run top level Organized Play events, such as Shonen Jump Championships and Regional Championships, without interruption for as long as possible and at great expense over the last three months.

Unfortunately, Konami has continued to disregard the needs of the Yu-Gi-Oh! community and the court has placed a temporary injunction against us on all Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME products. This ruling will immediately affect all support for Yu-Gi-Oh! online and through Upper Deck’s proprietary Mantis tournament software. In addition, the cancellation of Upper Deck sponsored Organized Play, which it hoped would be temporary, is now permanent. We do not feel that this course of action is in the best interest of the players and regret that the absence of Upper Deck support will leave such a large void in the Yu-Gi-Oh! community.

As Upper Deck moves forward with this transition, we will always keep our customers’ needs in mind. To find out more about our exceptional products and exciting Organized Play opportunities for all of our great games, please visit www.UDE.com.

Common Lord of the Rings Terminology

From my brother Matt, a heavy Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) player:

There are a few terms and such that come in handy.

Morale – Hit points.

Power – Used to cast special powers, as opposed to regular attacks.

Death – no one dies in LotRO, rather you’re defeated. The penalty is two fold – you will have item wear that will cost money to repair; you will be given Dread that will reduce your Morale for 10 minutes. If a Minstrel, Captain, or Loremaster revives you then you receive less item wear and no Dread. There are other ways to get rid of Dread either from a Minstrel using a ‘Song of Salvation’ on you or by using an Edelharn Token.

Edelharn Token (or Token) – removes Dread and provides a morale bonus for a short period. They can be bought in the Auction House or if you’re a Jeweler you can make your own.

Might
– an attribute that determines how much damage you do with a melee weapon, how easily you block with a shield, or parry an attack.

Agility – an attribute that determines ranged damage and how easily you can evade.

Vitality – an attribute that determines Morale, resistance to disease/poison/wounds. Also determines out of combat morale recovery.

Will – an attribute that determines Power, resistance to fear.

Fate – an attribute that determines in combat Morale and Power recovery.

Deeds – These are like Badges in CoH. When you complete a Deed you earn a title for your character. For example, if you complete all 15 books of Volume 1 of the Epic Book you earn the title “Champion of Eregion” for your character. There are others, such as “Wolf-Tamer” that you earn for killing enough wolves in a specific area.

Traits – They can be earned by completing the second tier of Deeds (Virtues), by using your class powers, by defeating a number of your racial enemies, or completing a legendary book. They provide special bonuses that you can equip to boost some aspect of your character. To use the bonus you must visit a Bard and pay cash to equip the trait. The higher your level, the more of these you can equip.

A Virtue provides three small bonuses that can be increased by completing deeds. Each zone has Deeds that increment most Virtues – you’ll receive a notice when you’ve started or earned one. For example, you could gain +300 Fear Resistance, +5 vitality, and +25 armor at Level 1. At level 2 (of the Virtue) you could have +325 Fear resistance, +7 vitality, and +30 armor.

Each Race has historic enemies. Kill enough of them and you earn a racial bonus. For example, elves can earn +2% damage with bows by killing enough Orcs. There are some other racial traits, such as ‘Return to Rivendell’ that can allow elves to travel immediately to Rivendell from any location.

Class Traits are earned by using special abilities. For example, if you’re a Hunter and you set 500 traps you earn the ‘Combat Traps’ trait that allows you to set traps during combat.

Legendary Traits are class specific. They can’t be earned until L39. They come in two parts – you must find a legendary trait book for your class and then find the missing pages of the book. The books and pages drop off different mobs you’ll encounter in the course of questing. You may have to grind a bit to complete them because some pages can be rare drops. On my Captain I have a Legendary Trait called “Wrath of the Oathbreakers”. This allows me once every 5 minutes I can call in three ghosts to attack a mob, reducing it’s damage resistance by 35% for 30 seconds. It’s pretty freakin’ awesome.

Conjunctions, Fellowship maneuvers – These are special maneuvers a group can do for a great reward. They are random unless you have a Burglar or higher level Guardian/Champion in the group.

Basically, a bullseye will pop up on the screen and you have a couple seconds to click it. This pops a diamond shaped box with Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green buttons on it. Each group member selects a button and performs a specific task afterward. If they’re performed in the correct order you get a massive bonus. Red and Yellow buttons may be grayed out if you’re not within your attack range of the mob that your group has received a conjunction on.

You need at least 2 people in a group for a conjunction. The group leader can select them anytime and you’ll get a pop up on screen when you join the group (if it’s set) and when the group has a conjunction. Every time you complete a fellowship maneuver it will be added to your list and you can set it when you’re leader.

For example, if you’re in a 5 person group you can perform a specific maneuver called “Pure of Heart”. The first three people select Green and the last two select Blue. This doesn’t do any damage but restores about 90% of a group’s morale and power. Another is called “Hew the Stone” – you have the first 5 people select Red and the last one selects Blue. This deals a massive amount of damage, the group receives some Power, and the player who selected Blue at the end receives an Oathbreaker ghost to protect them for 60 seconds.

A smart group leader will set these in advance and tell who to select which button. With “Pure of Heart” I normally have the Melee classes select Green and the Ranged classes select Blue.

Lord of the Rings Online Classes Primer

The following was written by my brother Matt to explain the classes in Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) to one of his friends. He is currently unemployed, so he has lots of time to play LOTRO and learn its nuances, unfortunately for him. I thought his description was worth sharing with the Gamer Hotsheet readers:

At the moment there are 9 classes: Burglar, Captain, Champion, Guardian, Hunter, Loremaster, Minstrel, Runekeeper, and Warden. Each has some interesting strengths and weaknesses.

Burglar – Think Frodo or Sam. Only Humans and Hobbits can select this class. Most Burgs I’ve seen are Hobbits. The strengths of the class are stealth and stunning mobs.

They solo well and a good burglar can pull down much more powerful mobs like Trolls solo. The weakness is that you’re in medium armor and you’re a melee class. The Burglar’s role in groups is setting up Conjunctions, a group attack on a single target that can heal, deal massage damage, or provide other temporary benefits to the fellowship.

Captain – Think Boromir. Only Humans can select this class. The strengths of this class are what it can do for a group – heal, resurrect in combat, and provide powerful buffs. You also get a pet that provides additional buffs. The weaknesses are that you’re a tank without a heavy shield and you deal less damage than a Champion.

A good Captain is almost a necessity for a group. At Level 60 my Captain can give a group +30% morale, +25% power, or +60 might and agility. I can throw a group heal that also restores power. I can resurrect twice during combat, one of my rezes also give the group a damage buff for 30 seconds. I can also be a second tank. If you haven’t guessed I enjoy this as much as Minstrel.

Champion – think Gimli or Aragorn. Champions are the AoE melee damage dealers. That’s their strength, nothing can pull down a group of enemies like a Champion. They have two weaknesses: dual wielding weapons means no shield; AoE generates a ton of Threat (ie attacks from mobs). Dwarves make the best Guardians, the class is limited to Humans, Elves, and Dwarves.

I haven’t played this class much, but they are very handy in groups for crowd control and interrupting enemies casters. The latter ability is very important at later levels because some boss mobs can heal themselves back to 100% without an interrupt.

Guardian – the ultimate tank class. Heavy armor and heavy shields means you can generate a lot of threat and take a tremendous beating. These are the guys who stand toe-to-toe with the nastiest mobs in the game. The weakness is they are light on damage. Soloing them requires some patience. Dwarves and Hobbits make very good Guardians.

I have played this one a bit and its an under-appreciated class. Good Guardians can keep mobs focused on them and not on the Hunters, Loremasters, Runekeepers, and Minstrels. Always happy to have one around. There is a slight threat imbalance right now that means keeping mobs away from Hunters and Minstrels is very difficult. That will be rectified in the next game update they say.

Hunter – Think Legolas. Any race may choose this class, most common are elves or hobbits. Very much like a blaster in CoH, with some decent melee damage and holds. The strength of the class is the massive amounts of damage (at L60 with the right gear you can do 5,000 points of damage with a single shot). The weakness is that with great damage comes great agro, and you’re in medium armor. Easy to solo.

There are plenty of these in the game, I’ve played one to L30. Hunters are great for killing a single mobs quickly, the opposite of Champions who can kill groups quickly. Most high level content requires at least one Hunter.

Loremaster – Think Gandalf. I think this class is limited to Humans and Elves. These guys provide crowd control through stuns, some heals and buffs, and have a pet. It’s a lot like Controller – weak at the beginning and powerful at the end. They can solo pretty well if you’re patient. They only use light armor, so it’s a hard life at lower levels.

I haven’t played this one to a high level, but in Moria I have a deep respect of the class. They can cure disease and wounds in combat, which is very important at high levels. There are some things in Moria that are much easier with a Loremaster. They can also draw power from an enemy and give it to another group member, which is very handy.

Minstrel – Based on Elrond they say. Healer with some minor group buffs. Your strength is that you can heal. You weakness is that healing generates a lot of threat and you’re in light or medium armor. Any race can play this class. You can solo this class but it’s not easy because your best attacks require that you sacrifice 65% of your heals. They’re also ranged AoE, which can cause some problems.

This is my main class and I love it dearly. It’s the hardest to play in the game and the most rewarding. I made most of my friends in game with this class. You can play without one, but it’s much easier with one. They’re hard to find for the solo issues, and good ones are even harder to find.

Runekeeper – This is a dual class that can either Heal or deal ranged damage. The strength is that you can switch between on the fly. The weaknesses are light armor only, and your best heals/attacks require throwing a lot of lower level ones first. This class is limited to Elves and Dwarves.

I haven’t played this one extensively, but it does solo well. The problem is that it solos so well that most of the players have no clue how to play in groups. They’re the ones choosing the wrong move during a fellowship maneuver, healing when you need damage or vice versa. They claim it is better for healing than a Minstrel, but you’re going to have a hard time proving it to me.

Warden – This is a mini-tank. The have a medium shield (Warden’s Shield) that makes up for medium armor. The strength of the class is that it uses combinations (called Gambits) to self heal, generate threat, or deal additional damage. The major weakness is that you’re a melee class in medium armor.

I haven’t played this one much, but it’s meant to be the ultimate solo class. I think the best role in a group for this class is as a second tank to tank mobs of the Hunters, LMs, Minstrels, and RKs.

One Small Step Games Back in Action

According to a post on their web site dated February 29, 2009, One Small Step “has been laying low for the past couple of years” and it’s now time to start announcing news of what they’ve been up to. They scrapped the idea of a Millennium Wars Advanced Rule Book and are now publishing Millennium Wars Advanced – The Game, the first installment of which will be in an upcoming issue of Against the Odds. Battle for Baghdad is reportedly ready for printing, and is “a big, gorgeous, multi-player boardgame designed to teach you about the limitations of power, insurgencies, and multi-organizational interactions.”

OSS also plans to offer one product a month at a steep discount.
