2K Announces Civilization Revolution – Sid Meier’s First Game for Next Generation Consoles
Legendary designer Sid Meier builds the Civilization experience from the ground up for consoles

New York, NY – June 28, 2007 – 2K, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today that it will publish Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution, the first next generation game designed by world famous game designer Sid Meier. Slated for a spring 2008 release for next generation consoles and handhelds, Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution is being developed by Firaxis Games™, 2K’s world-renowned development studio.

Sid Meier put computer gaming on the map when he delivered Civilization® to the gaming world, launching the “God Game” genre and creating one of the most award-winning and addictive strategy series of all time, including Sid Meier’s Civilization IV™, the Gamespy and GameSpot 2005 Game of the Year. Driven by sheer passion for the game concept, Meier is now handcrafting a brand-new Civilization experience designed and built from scratch for next gen consoles and handhelds.

“Civilization Revolution is the game I’ve always wanted to make!” said Sid Meier, Director of Creative Development at Firaxis Games. “We are excited to take advantage of the power of next generation consoles and the ingenuity of handhelds, to create a great and unique strategy game for newcomers to the series, as well as the millions of fans around the world who enjoy Civilization on the PC.”

In Civilization, players strive to become ruler of the world by establishing and leading a civilization from the dawn of man into the space age – waging war, conducting diplomacy, discovering technologies, going head-to-head with some of history’s greatest leaders, and building the most powerful empire the world has ever known.

Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution is a watershed game, offering players a chance to experience the epic empire-building world of Civilization in an all new accessible, visually immersive, and action-packed world specifically designed for the console and handheld gamer. Delivering Civilization’s renowned epic single-player campaigns featuring vast re-playability and unmatched addictive gameplay as well as revolutionary features like real-time interaction with leaders and advisors, extensive multiplayer capabilities and integrated video and voice chat, it will completely transport the Civilization series to a level of gameplay that fans have never seen before.

“Civilization is one of the world’s top selling PC game series with more than 8 million units sold, and continues to be recognized as one of the greatest franchises ever created,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “We are excited to have Sid Meier getting back to his roots as the game’s Lead Designer to carry on its legacy with Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution.”

Some of the key features that will resonate with fans of strategy games and the Civilization franchise include 16 civilizations to master and lead to victory, an array of famous historical leaders to play as or compete against, and accessible maps and streamlined time scale for quicker games, intense combat, and constant action. In online multiplayer mode, players will compete for world conquest and glory among their peers as they battle in teams, head-to-head or epic free-for-all matches. In addition, auto-matching, ranked games, leaderboards, achievements, downloadable extra content and integrated video and voice chat make the online play more versatile and fun than any previous version of Civilization and will allow players to see where they stand against the competition. Finally, the position of ruler of the world can be settled online.

Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution will be released in spring 2008 for next generation consoles and handhelds. For more information please visit http://www.civilization.com/.

From the announcement on the Matrix Games web site:

Versatility meets riveting gameplay in this turn-based strategy masterpiece!

Matrix Games and VR Designs are proud to announce Advanced Tactics! Building off of the success of the enormously popular People’s Tactics, Advanced Tactics offers players a robust interface and flexible gaming system that will allow for addicting, but realistic, recreation of a variety of historical periods and even some fictional ones!

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said “I’ve been a fan of VR Designs for quite some time now and I’m pumped to see that their latest release will be through Matrix Games. The depth and variety of strategic situations the player can be presented with in this game is truly something unique and I’m sure strategy gamers will agree.”

Victor Reijkersz, lead developer of Advanced Tactics added “The feedback and excitement we’ve received from the already huge community built around Advanced Tactics and its predecessor, People’s Tactics, is exhilarating and it continues to grow. The game is coming along quite well and I’m confident that People’s Tactics veterans and newcomers to this great system will both enjoy Advanced Tactics. We’re very lucky and honored to have such a well known company as Matrix Games publishing our game.

Advanced Tactics is a versatile turn-based strategy system that gives gamers the chance to wage almost any battle in any time period. Grab a Springfield and take re-fight the American Civil War or hop in that Sherman and battle through the lines of the Second World. Complete with a streamlined interface and an addicting style of gameplay, Advanced Tactics offers a unique and infinitely replayable experience for any strategy fan.

They’ve also added information about related products from LMW Works.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Released

The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

From the WizKids Inc. press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARVEL HEROCLIX: AVENGERS RELEASES TODAY!

June 27, 2007 (SEATTLE) — WizKids Inc. announced today the release of the Marvel™ HeroClix®: Avengers set, which continues the celebration of the fifth anniversary of HeroClix.

Avengers brings big changes to the HeroClix brand, which has become a staple in the hobby game community. Improving collectability and adding character cards, Avengers is completely compatible with all other HeroClix rules and characters. A new rarity scheme reflects the industry standard, using a colored set symbol on the figure’s base to indicate its rarity. Character cards give figures more thematic powers and abilities plus additional background information such as first appearances, real names, and notable events in the character’s history.

And never before has HeroClix offered consumers more value, with booster packs about 30 percent larger (to prevent damage to figures and cards) and an additional figure, bringing the total to five figures per pack. Avengers is available in booster packs (MSRP $9.99) that each contain five random miniature game figures with character cards and one feat card, bystander token or battlefield condition card.

WizKids’ Organized Play program* will support Avengers with a five-week tournament called “The Coming of Galactus™” world event. This will be the first opportunity players will have to play Avengers in a Sealed tournament environment.

A wholly owned subsidiary of the Topps Company (TOPP), WizKids is a Seattle-based game developer and publisher dedicated to creating tabletop games driven by imagination. Its HeroClix and Pirates brands are among the most successful games on the market today. Over 150 million game pieces have been sold worldwide. Dead Gentlemen Release Trailer for The Gamers 2

The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Dead Gentlemen Productions has released the trailer for the sequel to The Gamers. The movie is entitled The Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising. I’ve seen and enjoyed the original movie, so I expect this one will be pretty decent as well.

According to the official web site (linked above), here’s the story for The Gamers 2:

“All Lodge wants is for his gaming group to finish their adventure. Unfortunately, they’re more interested in seducing barmaids, mooning their enemies, and setting random villagers on fire. Desperate to rein in his players, Lodge injects two newbies into the distrust: a non-player character controlled by Lodge, who the power gamers immediately distrust, and the rarest gamer of all — a girl. Can the group overcome their bickering to save the kingdom, or will the evil necromancer Mort Kemnon triumph unopposed? A parody of fantasy films and the adventure gaming community, The Gamers: Dorkness Rising is a hilarious romp through the world of sword and sorcery — in this case, a world of exploding peasants, giant house cats, and undead roast turkeys. Game on!”

Check out the trailer via the link above.

Save on Reaper Minis at Miniature-Giant.com

The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Editor’s Note: This is something of a shameless plug, so if you’re not into that sort of thing, move on with my apologies…

Miniature-giant.com has announced that it will be the exclusive representative for Reaper Miniatures at the Origins 2007 game convention. They will be located in a big castle at the end of the "paint and take" event in the Exhibit Hall. Their online store claims to offer the lowest online prices, over 25% off that of smaller local retailers. They stock all Dark Heaven and WarLord miniatures, current and out of print. They ship all WarLord figures with their cards. They provide free Reaper Miniatures catalogs on all USA orders over $50, and free shipping on USA orders over $75.

Right now, they’re doing a promotion where they’ll credit people for referring others to their site to shop. Referrers (that would be me in this case), receive a 5% credit for all purchases made by those referred to the site. The purchasers, as I understand it, also get a 5% credit, so it is nice to note who referred you because it benefits us both.

So, if you’re looking for some miniatures and want to save a little money, check out miniature-giant.com and when you sign up for your account there, tell them your referring customer was "msalsbury" (that’s me). Thanks, in advance!

Get Custom Tokens Made by Litko Aerosystems

The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Editor’s Note: This is actually one of the neater things I’ve seen offered for a while, potentially of use to wargamers, roleplayers, and miniatures gamers alike.

Litko Aerosystems’ new $6.99 Custom Tokens product allows you to create plastic tokens in one of 11 colors and 7 shapes, with the text of your choice on them (up to 12 characters). Each purchase gets a set of 10 tokens in a single design (i.e., they’re $0.699 each).

As Litko said in their announcement of the product:" Need a special marker or counter to keep track of unit status? What about some chits to show location of enemies or resources? How about specialized numeric counters personalized with your initials? Because this is your personal token, the possibilities are endless."

Colors include: Clear, Transparent Gray, Transparent Yellow, Flourescent Amber, Flourescent Blue, Flourescent Green, Black, Blue, Brown, Green, and Red.

Shapes include: Circle, Octagon, Oval, Arrow, Triangle, Hexagon, and Square.

Nifty little product, and not terribly expensive either.

The family-friendly folks at Playroom Entertainment have released a number of new games recently, including the following:

Hop To It!
This is a fast-paced memory game of timed object recognition for 2 to 6 players ages 5 to adult, and can be played in about 10 minutes. The game contains 21 object tiles, 3 cover disks, a timer, and instructions in English, Spanish, and French.

M is for Mouse
This game teaches letter and object recognition, featuring fast-paced visual perception and early phonetic training. It’s designed for 2 to 5 players ages 6 to adult, and can be played in 15 minutes. It contains 5 reference books, 26 cards, 30 chips, and instructions in English, Spanish, and French.

Cowabunga
This card game features light strategy play, uses basic addition skills, builds memory, and is suitable for 2 to 5 players from ages 6 to adults to complete in approximately 30 minutes. It includes 58 wave cards, 21 obstacle cards, 17 cows, and instructions in English, Spanish, and French

Temple of the Monkey
This game features strategic gameplay with social interaction, and utilizes a unique path system for a different game every time it’s played. This jungle adventure card game is suitable for 2 to 4 players ages 10 through adult to play in 45 minutes. It contains 54 path cards, 54 tactic cards, 1 temple tile, 4 explorer tokens, and instructions written in English, Spanish, and French.

Bull in a China Shop
In this game, each player is trying to acquire the most china for their shop, but it’s only a matter of time before the bull comes running through it. Players buy china until their money runs out, then must let bulls in to shop and make more money. Unfortunately, while the bull is in your shop, he will destroy some of the valuables. The trick, then is to make sure you don’t have what the bulls are looking for, and send them to opponents who might. The game is intended for 3 to 5 players ages 8 to adult to play in 30 minutes. The game consists of 89 cards, a scorepad, and instructions in English, Spanish, and French.

In Limbo
This game teaches strategic mathematics, probability manipulation, and social interaction. Players use their cards on the good or evil side of each of the five colors, tipping the balance towards good on some colors and bad on others. Since scoring takes place only on the cards in the player’s hand, players must carefully weigh the consequences of their choices before they play. This game is suited to 3 to 5 players ages 8 to adult to play in 30 minutes. It consists of 5 color cards, 5 doubling cards, 70 playing cards, and instructions written in English, Spanish, and French.

Mother Sheep
This game features strategic planning, resource management, spacial thinking, visual perception, and social interaction elements. The game contains 1 mother sheep, a corral tile, 10 sheep pawns, 10 sheep tiles, 80 fences, a fence bag, and instructions written in English, French, and Spanish.

Unspeakable Words
This Call of Cthulu word game features a unique word game mechanic based on the works of HP Lovecraft. Players use their hand of cards to form words to score, based on the number of angles in the word. Every misstep can be costly, since players must test the strength of their mind against the word’s point value. Fail, and you step closer to madness. The game is intended for 2 to 6 players, ages 10 to adult, to play in 30 minutes. It contains 96 letter cards, a 20-sided die, 30 Cthulu pawns, and instructions written in English, French, and Spanish.

Shrapnel to Publish Scallywag Dungeon Crawler for PC

The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

From the Shrapnel press release:

Hampstead, NC, 27 June, 2007

Hone your blades and prepare for glory! Shrapnel Games is pleased to announce that British developer Chronic Reality has joined with Shrapnel to publish their upcoming game, Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa, a single-player, action orientated dungeonbash for Windows.

In Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa, a mysterious evil has begun to plague the good citizens of Gosling valley. Livestock is vanishing, people are cowering in their homes, and telemarketers keep calling during the dinner hour. Even worse, the valley’s supply of mushrooms is suffering, and for the valley mushrooms are life. Providing everything from shelter to sustenance, from magic to medicine, the shroom supply must flow once more!

In the tradition of NetHack and Rogue, players control a single character, Rapius the mighty farm laborer, in his quest to defeat the forces of darkness and become the savior of Gosling valley (and its shrooms!). Rapius, who begins his virtual career with barely a rag to wear, must penetrate eighty levels of darkness, growing in power with each denizen of the dark slain, each newly acquired trinket, and every mushroom consumed, until at last he meets his final foe, the dreaded Medusa!

Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa provides players with a fascinating array of options to explore, making every game a unique experience. Rapius will face dozens of monsters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, various environmental hazards, and deadly boss encounters. Along the way he’ll learn to craft items, drink potions, eat magic mushrooms, smoke fungus, imbibe booze (from cheap Gobbo ale to lip-smacking Moon River whiskey), and much more. Among other things Rapius can become invisible, diseased, hungover, poisoned, and even a werewolf (hopefully not all at once)!

Rapius must also master his lantern, his source of illumination in the underworld. If the lantern is turned up Rapius will be able to see (and be seen!) further into the void, allowing him to make long range attacks on his foes. If the lantern is turned down, Rapius can attempt to creep past danger, sidestepping beasties he’s not quite ready to tackle.

If the lantern is burning hot and bright, oil is more quickly consumed than when the wick is low. While oil flasks are scattered throughout the adventure, knowing when to flare and when to soften the light is a key strategy to Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa.

With eighty levels consisting of eight worlds, dozens of monsters, countless numbers of items, diverse player conditions, and a ton of surprises, all randomly generated before each session, Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa provides endless replayability. If players ever do reach a point that they think they’ve seen everything the game has to offer thanks to RAGe, they haven’t!

RAGe stands for Random Adventure Game engine, and is included with Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa. RAGe allows full modding capability without any programming experience. Literally everything in the game can be altered with RAGe, allowing not only whole new adventures for Rapius, but totally new games. Change the graphics, items, magic, music, everything. All it takes is creativity and time.

Scott Wakeling of Chronic Reality reports, “Our primary goal with Scallywag was that gameplay would always come before graphics. Given the choice between a fancy new visual effect, or some fun new mutator or magic item, we would shoot for gameplay every time! Looking at the game now, there is so much to be discovered and enjoyed in Scallywag, it’s just awesome. Effort really equals reward with this title!

Our second main goal was that Scallywag should be highly moddable without any programming skills. What we didn’t realize in those early days was how the decision would come to dramatically affect the game’s own development internally. It has always been so fast and easy for us to add new content and behavior to Scallywag. Many features have come and gone in the past, as removing something that didn’t work was just so easy thanks to the RAGe. What we’ve ended up with is a really finely balanced game, there’s just nothing we would want to remove now!

We’re hoping all our players are going to get as much fun from playing this game as we got from making it!”

Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa is currently undergoing beta testing, and no release date has been set. Stay tuned to Shrapnel Games (www.shrapnelgames.com) for more information as it is made available, and in the meantime be sure to check out our catalog of award-winning titles. We also have available totally free games, now featuring Conquest of Elysium II, forerunner to the famous Dominions series of fantasy-strategy games.
